Abstract

Timed Event Graphs are a class of Petri nets which can model some kinds of manufacturing processes. In this paper, a manufacturing system which includes the repetitive production of different products is represented by a Timed Event Graph, so as to apply the relevant performance analysis techniques. The objectives of the related optimization problems take into account the maximization of the throughput of the system and the cost of the plant. The relevant decision variables are related to the machine execution speeds, the dimensions of the lot-sizes for products, and the work-in-progress in the plant. It is shown that the overall optimization problem can be decomposed into two subsequent mathematical programming problems. The first one is a nonlinear, continuous mathematical programming problem, whereas the secopnd one is an integer linear programming one. Some special cases in which the structure of the first problem is relatively simple are discussed.
